Scenario:
May 12 – 2:10 p.m.
A 911 call comes in to the small Parkersburg Police Department in West Virginia. A woman identifies herself as Maria Graner. She lives at 1430 Industrial Way in Parkersburg. She opened her third floor bathroom window that faces the alleyway that separates her apartment building from the one next door. It is early summer and the afternoon has become a very warm 78 degrees. Ms Graner wanted to let some of the heat out of her apartment. When she looked out of her window down to the alleyway she noticed someone’s legs sticking out from behind the dumpster used by both apartments. Ms Graner assumed that it was another homeless person sleeping behind the dumpster. This would not have been the first time. She called down to the person several times, but there was no response. Concerned, she called the Parkersburg P.D.
When the first squad car arrived, the lone officer approached the dumpster. He too, expected that the person was a transient but took the same precautions that we have learned about in our text and his actions reflected his training. In fact, there was a dead body behind the dumpster. The officer called it into the station.
The body is that of a young white male who looked to be in his twenties. He has brown, shoulder-length hair and his eyes are open – they are brown as well. His neck shows ligature marks. He lay on his left side with both arms down and in an anterior position (in front of him). His left leg is fully extended and his right leg is bent at the knee and crossing his left leg at about mid calf. Both knees have abrasions. He was wearing only a white T-shirt and white knit boxers that appeared to be torn open in the back. There is blood on the rear of the boxers. The right side of the torn boxers holds the majority of the blood. The left side of the boxers has, what appears to be transfer impressions of the blood pattern on the right. His T-shirt has blood spatter patterns on the posterior and drop patterns on the anterior. There are grass stains on the right shoulder of the shirt. He wears no shoes or socks. There is no jewelry on the body.
There is a tan line mark on the victim’s right wrist with a distinct marking as if a bracelet with holes or openings let the sun tan the skin that was exposed there.
The victim has obvious extensive head injuries. The hair is matted with dried blood and it looks as if the scalp has been torn away is at least two places. There are side-by-side slashes in the forehead about a half-inch in width and an inch in length. The right ear is partially ripped and a deep laceration is present above the same ear.
The victim’s hands have blood on the palms and it appears that the right forearm is broken about mid-way and on the underside. There are numerous contusions on the left arm as well.
The dumpster has two lids, one of which is open. Near the top of the dumpster and in plain view are the following: A brown grocery bag on its side. Lying in front of the bag is a pair of pantyhose with stains that look like dried blood; a khaki green corduroy shirt that has been torn in several places; a pair of blue denim sneakers with the shoelaces gone and a brightly patterned silk scarf with several small holes in one of the corners.
