“The David Westerfield Murder Trial”
Detective James Tomsovic describes investigation”
As you view the video, pay close attention to the questions that the prosecutor asks and the response of the detective. Also note the amount of evidence and how miniscule it may seem on first glance. In your comments, respond to whether, after viewing the video, your investigation was as thorough and what you would have done differently – post your thoughts. Develop one question that you would ask on cross-examination and post it.
2. Scenario:
We are advancing on the murderer! You now have the autopsy report and will be filled with questions, I’m sure, for your humble M.E.! Read the report CAREFULLY or you will miss important information. Please remember that you are required to make four postings a week. So far, I am extremely impressed with the eagerness and astuteness you have all shown! Don’t give up…I promise that you are closer than you think.
Some new information:
- The Flying “J” is a real location. Matthew’s transaction record was traced to the Flying “J” location in Beaverdam.
- You may not ask your mediator for information that you can easily research yourself - like (hint, hint) rest stops, for instance.
- THINK! A little common sense goes a long, long way. Look for the obvious – why do need a search warrant, for example, when you haven’t even tried asking permission? Your budget is greatly strained. You are not in Miami Dade, ladies and gentlemen. What is the easiest, most obvious route to get what you need? Finally, if there isn’t an immediate answer, keep the information in your head – AND MOVE ON! You will waste time if you focus too much on things that can’t be answered right away. Remember, there is a killer out there – he may do it again if we don’t find him.
- Finally, I noticed an interesting phenomenon with both the groups. You have all begun to call the victim by his first name, Matthew. Some of you are even calling him “Matt.” What do you make of that?
